Crazy boatbuilding Joinery / New Tanks!

hi my name is leo and i am a boat builder and sailor in 2017 i bought a very old and quite famous wooden sailing yacht for the price of one dollar and ever since then i have been rebuilding that boat from the keel up with the with the help from a lot of amazing people, in this video we're going to look at some really interesting woodwork on Deck, looking a lot at the Sills that Clifton has been diligently making for the last few months and they're teak pieces that go underneath. all the hatches and separate them from the deck planks one more piece and the sills are roughed out that's exciting i'm excited so i can start the scary part profiling all this after this all this foreign labor investment is basically teak pieces with shape that they run around the outside of all deck openings under hatches or in a cabin below cockpit styling Clifton has already glued and shaped all the sills to actually fit the boat and that was quite complex because none of them are straight or flat in any direction, they have to be curved to match the rake and sweep of the deck now, before he could start making the more complex fixtures in the corners of the cabin, he had to make and install a small Oak blocking me that accepts and supports the end of the deck boards and that curved sill piece that the small little knee was rebated or slotted into the top of the deck frame and also bolted into place I don't fit here I don't fit fit on boats interesting um not something I really check before I get on the boats but as soon as I started buying them, I realized that you are not a man the size of a boat. the little knee is here to catch the board and bras where the cabin next to house hairstyle begins on top of this there is going to be that nice radius piece that is the stencil etched all my curves into it here is the bit of teeth that I am going to take off the outside of the curve I can cut with a bearing bit Cove bottom bit bearing on the outside because that bearing will follow the outside of the part this part I have nothing so I have to make a guide to see how we did it i doubt i'll cry on camera and you can see this is all going to go away pretty easily this outer radius i can tackle with this little weird hey lipton i'm finally pretty messy you made a mess i love this kind of mess you like that smell me I wish people could smell that spicy powder, you're amazing Clifton, no, no, no, don't go telling stories, thank you, foreigner, inch and a half, inch and a half, inch and a half, inch and a half inch and a half half and a little bit better which is what I want on the outside tip I shaped the sill under the corners there is going to be a nice radius corner post I hope these straight line pieces they be so much easier to shape i can just run the bottom i bit them and all my marks lined up so it looks like that's going to be that easy foreigners feeling good that this is going to take shape today foreigners look great nifty and got some more exciting news uh almost right after lunch uh hopefully some new

tanks

are coming but first we have to go to jen to pick up some of her famous stromboli there has to be a better way to cut stromboli wait patrick patrick It's called a knife, but in all seriousness, the costs of this project are skyrocketing right now and recently and the money we have.

I'm going to get paid to talk about these knives I'm going to pay for a really fancy fridge freezer unit huh and a couple of meals for the team ok kamikoto knives are made with high quality Japanese steel using traditional methods to all the home chefs i hate this so much i like to season my purple heart with just a little salt and pepper the knives come in this beautiful durable ash wood box that would make a great gift or a damn mallet it's durable hey hey Leo, did you know that each of these blades is individually inspected?
crazy boatbuilding joinery new tanks
Makes for a perfect edge, great for shaving oak, not bad. I'm going to get rid of all my wire strippers, but I hate paying full price for stuff, hey. Nick, you won't believe this kamikoto actually has several specials right now, well we had so much fun making this announcement, sometimes we need to take our mind off the boat for a minute, but actually I've been using them at home for a few weeks and i really like them each knife has a lifetime guarantee and apparently they are used by michelin star chefs all over the world so you can get an extra fifty bucks of these using our special promo code samsung 50 and there will be there are links below the video and up here so thanks to kamakoto for giving me some nice knives to pay for our cooling system as well as some nice alcoholic meals for the crew water tank still no problem yeah they should be here . today tell pat rick i don't want to talk to him anymore honestly sure it contains that information yeah i'm more confused what's that called? lock up guys so our water

tanks

have arrived they're made out of stainless steel they're going to go under the sole in the bilge in the saloon and galley area they were built by Patriot Marine Fabrication in New Jersey and they're really beautiful very well done very well welded now the fit of these on the boat is going to be pretty tight and pretty critical because I was really trying to take advantage of every inch of space in the bilge so I did a pretty detailed model but I'm a little worried if they're going to fit or not because I'm not too sure how accurate my model was so there's less than an inch to spare but let's just put them on and keep our fingers crossed thanks you cute foreign dog when you cut it , I don't know what You're talking about me, I'm sorry, my God, ears, y'all, okay, yeah, maybe you've got enough dog, fat bushes up there, yeah, you only gave me a little, I gave you five, remember your message said it is not necessary. thank god he said thanks anyway appreciate oh cool ah has anyone looked at the handwriting it's been upside down for a while guys oh red face it's good luck to you buddy what do you think it's a water tank not down the mountain taxes foreigners fit? it's a huge relief it was very tight but that's how we designed them so that's just a testament to the skills of the people who made these

tanks

which was Patriot Marine in New Jersey and they did a great job great communication great

Tanks

from speed and beautiful.

I can't recommend them highly enough now for getting such an accurate design. We did a lot of work first making door skin models and then we had a cad design that we put into the software so you could use a 3D point. Cloud laser scanning of the inside of the boat to locate these

tanks

in town and see if they were going to fit so great to be able to use such modern technology in such a traditional wooden boat and that allowed us to make really efficient use of this space now that these

tanks

are actually cargo, they're very tightly attached to the frames, they're going to have a couple of little blocks under them front and back, and then the floorboards sit directly on top of the

tanks

on thin supports that are will be placed on the baffles. inside the

tanks

there are three baffles inside each tank there are two inspection hatches in each tank there is an ultrasonic sending unit in each tank that tells you how much water is in the

tanks

and again these are fresh water

tanks

so that this is for drinking water for washing and showering water etc and they will be fed by a water maker as well from the dock and then the outlets are at this end at the lowest point and those various fill inlets and outlets and other inputs and outputs for various things each tank hold about 72 gallons so that will be a total between them about 150 gallons which is not a huge amount for this size you should typically plan on a gallon per person per day, but the water maker will refill them. so it should work indefinitely for coastal cruising now whenever you do a long voyage I would take extra water in smaller containers elsewhere on the boat in case the water generator fails and in that situation it's really good to have many smaller containers anyway in case they get contaminated or have a leak in one of their

tanks

or want containers now.

I'm sure when I said

tanks

many of you thought I was talking about diesel

tanks

because of course in our last video we had a big diesel. tank disaster of course we don't have our new diesel

tanks

yet because that was very recent but we have a plan we're going to use fabricated aluminum or aluminum as some people call it the

tanks

did it we're going to go with a

tanks

out of aluminum and, um, they're going to be done close by from another 3D model, a cat drawing that we've been developing now Clifton's been having fun making curved pieces of teak for the deck, so now it's my turn that I'm going to do some curvaceous bits of alien purple heart, so the piece that I'm about to do here is the bottom of a block that's going to go above deck, right on the bow, right on the port side, and it's going to to receive the ball works as they rotate and they're going to end up in this recess in this block and then this block will lead into the stem and you'll have the chain roller for the anchor chain between this block and the Now this is really a real fix unusual entity, it's not something I've seen on a ship like this and it looks a bit strange, but it makes sense because you know what often happens is that books go to the end. the stem and then a hole is cut through the books for the anchor chain and the anchor stock to go through um but with this arrangement there is more of a slot between the Bullocks and the stem and that means that in You could actually pull the anchor up from its stowed position just lift it up onto the deck very easily which would be really nice and you can also pull the chain over the handrail if you ever need it so although unusual there is something of logic behind it and because it's so weird or so unusual and quite characteristic of the ship, I think it's going to be a lot of fun to replicate that's fine foreigner is fine assistant foreign foreign foreign foreign no, not me, have fun with that guy.

You're going to save me Tyson oh I don't think so foreign thank you so I just called the Coast Guard on that boat. on the Rocks there and, uh, that's all we can do, we really hope they do something about it. The wind that prevails here is from the west and blows in that direction, but from time to time it blows very hard from the east and there are many boats dragging anchors and very often they end up on this beach thank you foreigner foreigner don't do that thank you foreigner now it has done most of the way on the Sills and they look really great since you still have to glue put them on the bed and secure them to the boat In the meantime my bulwark finishing piece is working great now because it is an important structural part and because right now it has an exposed end of grain on the front and back.
crazy boatbuilding joinery new tanks
I have actually decided to put some kind of Purple Heart structural posts on the front and back of that piece, they will be glued and screwed together and should make it stronger to join the two pieces together and also prevent the end grain from breaking in that exposed front end that sticks out from the outside of the boat. I also have to add a long etching piece to the side to get rid of a check that could cause problems later down the line. g holes to be able to screw it through the deck and the deck structure now is going to be a challenge because the bolts are going to be about two feet long and the drill end has to come out inside the boat within a very small area and if i lose that area it's going to cause a lot of problems foreigner thank you foreigner foreigner so it turned out as good as i hoped the two holes i drilled came out in exactly the right place and the little gap between the joist the shelf and the planks under the deck so that's great, it means the Bots should work.
I just cut a thread and threaded some bolts in and then I can get this bottle down which will be a lot safer than just screwing or retarding them. right down to the deck of course so that's the hard part i really think i just have to give them a little more shape every once in a while hopefully i can bolt them down and lay them on the deck thanks they say things are getting darker, good year, I may not li In September, I know there is nothing to fear. Alien put in the Mind. Bodies flowed outside.
Thank you so this book end piece is finished and installed and I am very pleased with it. It was a lot of fun making it and it feels pretty solid. there's a couple of Big 5 8 bolts going down through the deck frame and eventually there's going to be a chain roller in this Gap here and part of that will be a big bolt going through this piece and into the stem for that to support it evenPlus, the anchor chain will eventually run between these two pieces and over the chain roller and then when the anchor is stowed it will run up the shank and the anchor material will pass through this gap. eventually go against the struts here and then taper into this notch on this block the distortions will cut through here and there will be a t-cap rail hopefully going along the top of all of this like I said this is a detail quite unusual il I haven't seen this on many ships but it's really cool to be able to replicate such a unique part of this ship and it makes a lot of sense.
I think it will be really nice to be able to raise the anchor from deck 40 without having to pull it all the way out through a hole in the bulwix now this is one of the fridge freezer units that tamikoto knives paid for this just arrived and it's quite striking is a drawing that it pulls out and this is going to be mounted under some of the sofas in the lounge and there will be a freezer so this is where all the ice cream will go and there is also another unit in the way that is different is a built in fridge unit that will be accessed from the top and will go inside the kitchen cabinets but its great for i got this it wont be installing for a while i have to sell everything in the lounge first right now We're going to check with Clifton though, he's done really well on the Sills, all he has to do now is glue the bed together and attach them to the deck and then they're finished so I'm really looking forward to seeing them at his place abroad, come on Let's go install the Sills um, I've got these Hills down here on the bench and they're re-primed with paint to insulate them from the deck joists and delphinite bedding compounds, the miters; however, we are going to glue them down with g-flex epoxy per our Wizards epoxy recommendation, featured in the last video.
Russell Brown looks good, assistant, thank you, please, I'm sorry. well now those things are going to be there for a while, uh, a hundred years from now, the next guy to restore this ship, we'll look at those parts so the Sills are complete and look fantastic. Clifton did a great job. great job on these they are much tougher and more complex than they look especially with these half mitered joints in each corner the cleats the recesses for the hatches now stills like this are not essential to building a traditional deck there's a lot of B oats that don't have these and that's fine but if you don't have some sort of sill you need to have the sides of the hatch going down into the deck frame which can cause problems with caulking between the sills halves of the sides and deck planks. or you have to fit them on top of the deck planks which again can cause problems with water ingress and replacing the deck planks with seals like this fixes all of those problems plus raises the joints above the deck where they won't settle water and they look great although they require a lot more work so that's the downside but I'm really glad we've gone ahead with these now of course there's been a lot of work that hasn't been on this video the whole team has been working really hard and doing a great job so a big thanks to all of them hopefully we'll catch up on a lot of that work in the next video but for now thanks for watching and a big thanks to everybody. that you have donated or otherwise supported this project it makes a huge difference and means that we can continue to do this work and I can continue to make and edit these videos so I really appreciate it and see you next time cheers thank you
