Movie News Sept. 13, 2022 -- Breakfast All Day
i would like to thank the tv academy for this award. our breaking
news of the day is that jean-luc gadar has died, yes new wave legend, icon, the words auteur and iconoclast are often thrown around but they're totally appropriate for the occasion, um, in honor of gadar's death i edit this video completely out of order, a whole bunch of jump cuts and random words on the screen that mean nothing, they don't mean anything, but uh yeah, as he famously noted every story has an opening middle and then, but not necessarily in that order, uh, he's one of the cornerstones of French New Wave, and so many of the innovations he brought to cinema have just become part of the language of cinema, I think, I think you know younger viewers might be surprised to discovering that we didn't always do it that way he did it first, and um, yeah, so I think in a lot of ways he got out of a tradition, at least early on ion operating out the strain of French Sineas that I adored Hollywood cinema, his breakthrough film Breathless was dedicated to Monogram Pictures, a low-budget studio that put out a lot of gangster films, but obviously he brought a real sense of politics and aesthetics with and was a true Radical Artist as a film and leaves behind a body of work that still feels fresh, that still feels like it challenges you to join him and understand what he's doing and embrace his language , uh, the storytelling and the editing and the music and all those things uh, but yeah, it absolutely holds.
I was just doing a little research this morning. Many of his films are streamed on hbo max and the Critical Channel and Canopy. So if you're new to Jean-Luc Godard's work, there's a lot out there for you to check out and get a treat in store for, but we also have light fluffy stuff to talk about like that Emmys, which were the Emmys last night. Did you see a single second of the Emmys I didn't see and everything I read online was boy they sucked this year in terms of actually producing the show like the writing and where the cameras were and so I don't feel like I missed anything, I didn't see a second of it, I was last at Moon Age Daydream night so I missed everything, but I see that the way Kimmel did during Quinta Brunsons Victory for Abbott Elementary on stage lay what a big kerfuffle is.
I mean it was a big night for Shirley Ralph and Lizzo and zendaya won her second emmy who is like no black actress has won twice in this crazy category shirley ralph is the first er black woman to win er supporting er comedy uh since jack haye for 227 35 years ago and they're the only two in the history of the emmys are crazy yeah and i think a lot of people are mad that better call saul hasn't got anything yeah but you know they have still have one more entitlement season left so i imagine next year will be a big breakthrough i hope yeah um and then you know like the ted lasso people yeah like always and then follow up one ted lasso jennifer coolidge for the white one lotus and our friend amanda seifried amanda seyfried won oh did she did you know to thank the television academy for this award um well i miss it all but it all happened it reminds me every year like there's so much tv that we don't watch, like we mean it too much, like we get to a lot of big stuff on our patreon and then you realize like there's a follow up, yes no, and now more than ever, like in the last five years tv with the explosion and streaming there is so much content i dont know how someone puts their arms around everything i dont know there are not enough hours in the day because then you have things like d23 are happening to tell you the things that are coming up very soon and basically today we're just gonna be a trailer show because you've got the trailer for the third season of the mandalorian, alright boy hold on ready for adventure and the live action, the little mermaid, quote unquoted live action And yes, inside out two is coming and the secret invasion is coming.
Yeah, uh, the Santas, thank you so much, so it's just too much stuff, and uh, you know, we're going to do everything we can, we're going to try and make time for all that's going to happen in Loki season two which I'm really looking forward to, yes it will be fun. I've seen this picture of him and Harrison Ford embracing for the last few days and then of course Toronto is still there it's going to end pretty soon and so the brothers premiered to thunderous ecstatic laughter. My favorite line for the Q A was apparently when people gave a standing ovation and Billy Actor said go ahead I want it longer than the whale so let's talk about the whale because the way Brendan Frazier gets all these awards for his performance , but now i'm saying there is quite a divide between people saying it's fat phobic and its size and it's exploitative or is it how sensitive and it's a beautiful betrayal ike i haven't seen it so i know not yeah i haven't seen it either so i'll reserve it but i mean definitely i think you know it's funny why did they cast an actor wearing a fat suit for the whale Why did Steven Spielberg cast non-Jewish actors in most roles in Fableman's?
I'm sure they'll be addressed during awards season about what Toronto really is. You know unofficially that the prelude to Yes, You Mentioned the Fable Men's The, which premiered, is out now. I see many grown men tweeting about being brought to tears within seconds of the trailer that begins for the Fablements
movies are dreams you will never forget. Once again, Spielberg revisits his adolescence, his parents' divorce, as the source of his creative source, and so it's very personal to him, as Romo announced for Alfonso Quran and then was just last Nights when they premiered Pearl at midnight in Toronto Ty West to oh that's a surprise there's more it's not just x it's not just pearl it's a trilogy oh yes we have maxine with three exes and apparently after this little little teaser I know I wasn't watching because I know you.
It looks like an old VHS tape of La and apparently now with 1985 and Maxine has gone to the valley to pursue her porn star dreams. Yeah, uh, so a grand slam for Mia Goth, obviously she and Ty West really worked on this whole thing, so I didn't. I see Pearl Thursday night. We'll talk about that, uh, in our next episode. I Hear Nothing But Raves I've never heard Douglas Cirque quoted so many times in a discussion about a horror film, so I'm hooked. We will search for it and also for the magazine. They will love it.
I'm so excited talking to you about pearl it's so much fun and then the trailer for babylon came out and it looks amazing incredibly important than life yes it's in the stars. I'm a star. I didn't see it as you know. I try to avoid trailers these are places and there are
movies starring Margot Robbie and they are historical plays from the current twenties the current guys uh one is David or Russell one is Damian Chazelle so annoying and it's just trying so hard to be wild and scandalous and I just found it annoying so I hope it's good I always hope things are good okay so they're doing this thing for the reboot of the quantum leap to exist again in some form peacock i think is fine and thursday is a quantum leap day at least here in los angeles where they will throw prices back to 1985 i think yes and that means they it's a pop-up quantum jump experience that includes a gas station where it only costs 91 cents a gallon.
Oh man, this is gonna be like 10 cent beer night. That's going to be a show the orange traffic cones and the lines of the whole day line to get in, oh boy I hope it works and I hope they thought through their quad crowd crowd control procedures really well because, um, it getting ugly be nice to each other out there you guys it's just gas that's right it's just a quantum leap
