NASA Administrator Bill Nelson Remarks on Artemis I Launch Attempt
welcome back to the coverage of the
artemis
one launch
here at the launch
control center at the kennedy space center in florida i'm here with administrator
bill
nelson
who was on hand for the launch
today which was expected to be a big moment in the history of the space center but instead will have to wait another day the launch
attempt
was canceled admin thanks for being here what do you think? how do you feel after all this anticipation and buildup? that we don't launch
until it's okay and, in fact, they have a problem with the gases going to the engine, bleeding in an engine, you can't go, there are certain guidelines and I think it's illustrative that this is a very complicated machine, a very complicated system and all those things have to work and you don't want to light the glider until it's ready to go i have some personal experience and the crew i was on space shuttle flight 24 w We rubbed four times on the pad and the fifth try was flawless mission, we know if we'd have thrown in any of those thickets it wouldn't have been a good day and that was the team of Hoot Gibson and Charlie Bolden so you know. it's just part of the space business and it's part of a particular test flight we're emphasizing and testing this rocket and spacecraft in a way that you never would with the human crew on board that's the purpose of a test flight and you talk about complexity and certainly that's the case here and learning as we make these attempt
s actually this engine bleed was something they wanted to see and which dress rehearsal number four didn't get a chance to do it so by the hard work and team that is still here collecting data from this rocket and its current configuration any messages to the launch
team i want them to know that they are doing the perfect job that they always do uh they are seizing an opportunity while that vehicle is still full of energy to solve this problem and they are going to solve it, they will get to the bottom, they will fix it and then we will fly and when we fly we hope to have all our guests back either.![nasa administrator bill nelson remarks on artemis i launch attempt]()
Of course, there were huge crowds here for this
attempt
, many special guests, including the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, was here. Did you keep them informed about what was happening and what will happen next? on the plane i came right here to talk to some of the launch
control people and she's fully briefed on everything she's very happy to be here she's a keen space booster just like president biden so all of this will do make our country proud and kamala harris also chairs the national space council so she has an important role in our space program here senator nelson
