NASA Administrator Bill Nelson Remarks on Artemis I Launch Attempt
welcome back to coverage of the
launch here at kennedy space center
launch control center in florida i am here with
nelson who was present today for the
launch which was hoping to be a big moment in the history of the space center , but instead it will have to wait for another day. The
attempt to start was scrubbed.
Administrator. Thank you for being here. what are your thoughts that we won't start until it's right and indeed they have a problem with the gases getting into the engine breather. You can't walk on a motor.
There are certain guidelines and I think it's just illustrative that this is a very complicated machine is a very complicated system and all of these things have to work and you don't want to light the candle until it's ready to go. I have some personal experience and that crew I joined at 24 We scrubbed the pad four times and the fifth
attempt was a flawless mission. We know it wouldn't have been a good day if we
launched with one of those scrubs and that was the crew of Hoot Gibson and Charlie Bolden and you know it's just part of the space business and it's part of a test flight in particular we're stressing and testing this rocket and spacecraft in a way you would never do with the human crew on board, that's the purpose of a test flight and you're talking about the complexity and that's certainly the case here, and learn as we do these trials that this engine bleed was indeed something they wanted to see and which dress rehearsal number four did not get a chance to so for the hard work and team that is still here to collect data from this one Collect rocket and its current configuration.
Any message for the
launch team. I want them to know that they're doing the perfect job they always do, uh, they're taking an opportunity while this vehicle still has gas to solve this problem and they're going to work on it, they're going to fix that go to the bottom, they will have it fixed, and then we will fly, and when we fly, we hope that all our guests will be back. Of course, there were big crowds here for this
attempt. Many special guests were here, including United States Vice President Kamala Harris. Have you kept them up to date on what's happening and what's happening next?
Yes she and I had a good visit, I met her on the plane I came straight here to speak to some people from
launch control and she is very knowledgeable about the whole thing. She is very happy to be here. She's an avid space booster, as is President Biden, so this whole thing is going to be ours Country Pride and Kamala Harris also chairs the National Space Council and therefore plays a huge role in our space program here Senator
Nelson Thank you for yours Time. Thanks for being here having to wait Another day next availability is 2nd September although at this point we don't know if the
launch team will be using that so we're waiting for a press conference in about four hours to see to learn more about what it's for now for
nasa tv and coverage of the
I'm darryl nail, signing off. good day to you
